How It Works

How is a patio system sized differently from an indoor radiant floor?

Outdoor surfaces lose heat on all exposed sides, so the required BTU output per square foot is higher than for an enclosed slab. Altitude derating at 5,280 feet also reduces hydronic boiler output, so both factors are built into the load evaluation before the scope is written.

What happens if freeze protection is not specified correctly?

Hydronic lines with insufficient glycol concentration can freeze and burst in a hard Denver winter. A burst line can crack pavers, flood the subbase, and require full excavation to repair. The glycol spec and activation threshold are documented in the written scope to prevent this.

Is a hydronic or electric system better for my patio?

Hydronic suits larger terrace areas where the BTU demand justifies the manifold and boiler cost. Electric resistance systems are better for smaller patios or retrofits where running a hydronic loop outdoors is not practical. The assessment determines which fits your specific situation.

Do heated patio systems require a permit in Denver?
